À LA FIN DE LA GUERRE DES ANTIFASCISTES COMMUNISTES, PARMI LESQUELS DE NOMBREUX JUIFS, CHOISISSENT DE CONSTRUIRE « LE PREMIER ÉTAT ALLEMAND DES OUVRIERS ET DES PAYSANS ».

Ce sera la République Démocratique Allemande, pays où l'opposition au régime fut la plus faible du bloc de l'Est : il y eut peu de dissidents, pas d'opposition organisée comme en Pologne ou en Tchécoslovaquie avec la Charte 77, pas d'École comme celle de Georg Lukacs en Hongrie. Par loyauté vis-à-vis d'un régime dont ils approuvaient les buts, mais non le style et les méthodes, les marxistes est-allemands n'ont émis leurs critiques qu'au sein du Parti, et ce jusqu'à l'automne 1989. Lorsqu'ils prirent la parole publiquement afin de défendre le maintien d'une RDA non « comme elle avait été, mais comme elle aurait dû être », il était trop tard. Ils ne purent empêcher l'annexion sans condition de la RDA à la RFA dont l'Allemagne pourrait payer aujourd'hui le prix avec le vote, trente ans plus tard, en faveur de l'extrême-droite et le retour de l'antisémitisme. • Historienne du contemporain, SONIA COMBE est spécialiste de l’histoire du monde communiste est-européen et en particulier de l’Allemagne de l’Est. Elle est associée au Centre Marc Bloch, à Berlin où elle a enseigné à l’université Humboldt et à la Freie Universität. Tandis que la mise sur le même plan de la terreur nazie et du régime est-allemand tend à se banaliser outre-Rhin, il convient de remonter aux origines de la RDA. Interroger la notion de loyauté constitutive de l'identité de femmes et d'hommes dont « le rêve a été tué par des imbéciles » (Anderson) incite à repenser dans sa globalité l'expérience communiste.

Politische Gewalt im urbanen Raum

Politischer Protest und Gewalt sind in der Vergangenheit vielfach zum Gegenstand historischer, soziologischer und politikwissenschaftlicher Forschung geworden, ohne dass allerdings ihr spezifischer stadträumlicher Kontext Berücksichtigung gefunden hätte. Ausgehend von Henri Lefebvres Konzept eines "Rechts auf die Stadt" - und in kritischer Auseinandersetzung mit demselben - entwickeln die Autoren des vorliegenden Bandes spezifische Zugänge zum Verhältnis von politischer Gewalt und Stadtraum. Dabei rücken vor allem drei Kernfragen in den Blick: Kann Gewalt als erfolgversprechender Versuch gewertet werden, an der städtischen Politik zu partizipieren? Sind stadträumliche Veränderungen ursächlich für den Ausbruch von Gewalt im urbanen Kontext? Welche Konzepte und Praktiken wenden polizeiliche Sicherheitsapparate an, um städtische Räume zu kontrollieren und in welchem Verhältnis stehen diese zu Gewaltphänomenen? Diese drei Fragen stehen im Fokus von acht europäischen und globalen Fallstudien.

Pragmatism and the Wide View of Democracy

The aim of this book is to provide a fresh, wider, and more compelling account of democracy than the one we usually find in conventional contemporary political theory. Telling the story of democracy as a broad societal project rather than as merely a political regime, Frega delivers an account more in tune with our everyday experience and ordinary intuitions, bringing back into political theory the notion that democracy denotes first and foremost a form of society, and only secondarily a specific political regime.

The theoretical shift accomplished is major. Claiming that such a view of democracy is capable of replacing the mainstream categories of justice, freedom and non-domination in their hegemonic function of all-encompassing political concepts, Frega then argues for democracy as the broader normative framework within which to rethink the meaning and forms of associated living in all spheres of personal, social, economic, and political life. Drawing on diverse traditions of American pragmatism and critical theory, as well as tackling political issues which are at the core of contemporary theoretical debates, this book invites a rethinking of political theory to one more concerned with the political circumstances of social life, rather than remaining confined in the narrowly circumscribed space of a theory of government.

Unter Einbeziehung der Sichtweisen gebärdensprachlich gehörloser Menschen behandeln die Beiträge Bildungschancen und -methoden, Menschenrechte, Erfahrungen der Unterdrückung und Autonomie sowie die Selbstorganisation in verschiedenen politischen Systemen. Damit wird ein Grundstein gelegt für eine Gehörlosengeschichte im deutschsprachigen Raum, die sich ihrer vielfältigen transnationalen Wurzeln und Einflüsse bewusst ist.

Policy Transfer and Norm Circulation: Towards an Interdisciplinary and Comparative Approach

Policy Transfer and Norm Circulation brings together various fields in the humanities and social sciences to offer a renewed analysis of policy transfer and norm circulation, by offering cross-regional case studies and providing both a comprehensive and innovative understanding of policy transfer.

The book introduces a constructive interdisciplinary dialogue and comparative approach highlighting the partial and fragmented understanding of policy transfer, and the questions and challenges in the study of policy transfer in three parts. Firstly, notions of transfer and circulation, including law, (political) economy, sociology and history; secondly, a focus on European studies and the transfer of norms, both within and outside the EU; and finally, an examination within a broader IR context.

Ottoman Children and Youth in World War I

Described by historians as a "total war," World War I was the first conflict that required a comprehensive mobilization of all members of society, regardless of profession, age, or gender. Just as women became heads of households and joined the workforce in unprecedented numbers, children also became actively engaged in the war effort. Adding a new dimension to the historiography of World War I, Maksudyan explores the variegated experiences and involvement of Ottoman children and youth in the war. Rather than simply passive victims, children became essential participants as soldiers, wage earners, farmers, and artisans. They also contributed to the propaganda and mobilization effort as symbolic heroes and orphans of martyrs. Rebelling against their orphanage directors or trade masters, marching and singing proudly with their scouting companies, making long-distance journeys to receive vocational training or simply to find their families, they acquired new identities and discovered new forms of agency. Maksudyan focuses on four different groups of children: thousands of orphans in state orphanages (Darüleytam), apprentice boys who were sent to Germany, children and youth in urban centers who reproduced rivaling nationalist ideologies, and Armenian children who survived the genocide. With each group, the author sheds light on how the war dramatically impacted their lives and, in turn, how these self-empowered children, sometimes described as "precocious adults," actively shaped history.

« La manière dont l'Allemagne traite ses habitants […] n'est pas plus notre affaire que ce n’est celle d’un autre gouvernement de s’interposer dans nos problèmes. » Les mots de Robert Jackson, procureur en chef américain au procès de Nuremberg, sont sans ambages : la répression des crimes racistes commis par les nazis ne saurait ouvrir la voie à un examen international de l’ordre racial qui prévaut alors aux États-Unis. D’où la définition particulièrement corsetée du crime contre l’humanité adoptée en 1945.

À partir d’une enquête sur les lawyers qui, outre Atlantique, ont jeté les bases du procès, impulsé et conduit les débats, Guillaume Mouralis propose une relecture passionnante de Nuremberg. Il révèle le faisceau de contraintes professionnelles, sociales et culturelles qui ont lourdement pesé sur ce moment expérimental. Il s’interroge finalement sur son legs. Comment a-t-il été mobilisé par les luttes afro-américaines pour les droits civiques ou celles, utltérieures, contre la guerre du Vietnam ?
