Biography

Denis Eckert has worked in various research centres in France, Russia and Germany (Montpellier, Paris, Toulouse, Moscow, Berlin), successively as a senior researcher and then as a research director at the CNRS. He has also been recently a visiting fellow in Montreal (CIRST 2015) and Leipzig (Leibniz-Institut für Länderkunde 2015-2016). He has held various responsibilities (director of UMR, journal) and has been a member of various research evaluation bodies (National Research Agency, CNRS National Committee) and programme juries.

For 12 years he directed the online journal "Mappemonde" devoted to the question of the image and the map.

Denis Eckert works on regional and urban geography issues, in two different fields. His first focus is on the territorial dynamics of Central and Eastern Europe, and in particular on the "in-between states" such as Ukraine, at the crossroads of the influence zones of Russia and the European Union. He has recently published on the history of border areas and on the Donbass crisis zone, and is conducting field work on youth migration (including students). He coordinates a small group of researchers at the Marc Bloch Centre who, within the framework of the "Migrations, Mobilités, Reconfiguration des Espaces" cluster, are particularly interested in Eastern Europe and its evolution in contemporary times, defining it as a space of uncertainty where the populations' "waiting horizons" are to be built by individuals, in the absence of stable perspectives proposed by the State.

In addition, he works on the geographical dynamics of the academic world, and particularly on the territorial anchoring of research activity. He has directed numerous projects in this field (ANR Géoscience, Labex SMS projects in Toulouse) in an interdisciplinary framework (geography, sociology, history) in the field of "Sciences and Technology Studies". He worked on this subject both on a global scale, on the evolution of "cities of science" and on national case studies (Russia, Germany).

It is also very involved in the reflection on visualization and mapping, particularly with regard to "online" geovisualization tools.
