Researchtopic

I am interested in the different aspects and practices associated with "irregular" wars (partisan warfare in Russian) in the Russian imperial (post-) space, which I consider as political violence, whether deployed by "insurgents", "rebels" or "resistance fighters", or by state military forces of "counterinsurgency", "policing", conquest or colonization.

My main current areas of research are related to:

  •      the 1940s and the German-Soviet confrontation. Building on my PhD work on Soviet partisans, I continue to be interested in Nazi anti-partisan policies and the multiple guerrilla movements that have developed in response to imperial occupations during this decade.
  •      the role of irregular wars and their actors in the government of the Russian imperial space from the end of the nineteenth century to the thirties.
  •     the use of irregular warfare as an instrument of Russian imperial policy on the margins of the empire in the long term. In this context, I am currently working on the military relations between Russians and Kurds since 1878 as part of a project led by Etienne Peyrat.

Russia and the Kurds: Sharing War (19th-21st centuries)

As part of my research on irregular warfare, I am currently working on the military dimension of Russian-Kurdish relations since 1878, as part of the RUSKURD project led by Etienne Peyrat (University of Lille).
