Podcast - Brexit: European utopia in limbo?

Central to the European idea was the new narrative of a borderless union, with freedom of movement for all European citizens, beyond traditional national narratives. The Brexit referendum and the following highly conflictual negotiations have led to profound uncertainties both on the level of European utopia as a grand historical project and of European citizens’ daily lives.

Two weeks after yet another Brexit ultimatum, the Centre Marc Bloch will look at the effects of this “in-limbo situation” from two different perspectives: the politics of historical narratives about Great Britain and Europe, and intra-European mobility and migration.

Round table 1: “Brexit, a European history”

Patricia Clavin (University of Oxford), Kiran Patel (LMU Munich) and Christophe Charle (University of Paris 1) discuss the role of History and historical narratives in the Brexit process. How did historical narratives about the place of Britain in Europe shape the visions of Brexiteers and Remainers, and how does the outcome of the referendum and the political process around Brexit challenge standard narratives of British and European history?
