Embracing Embodiedness, Desire and Failure: Women’s Fluid Gender Performances in Sevgi Soysal’s Oeuvre from the 1960s.

The ‘women’s liberation’ of the global 1960s did not entail a full range of women’s rights, feminist politics and sexual freedoms in Turkey. On the contrary, the Turkish 1960s were characterised by a patriarchal heteronormative order that imprisoned women in a passive and essentially asexual identity and denied them control over their bodies. In Turkey, women’s emancipation was postponed. At the same time, the 1960s offered a juncture of literary renewal in women’s writing and representation, embracing the dictum ‘the personal is political’. This article focuses on three works by Sevgi Soysal (1936–1976), a key name of this period whose writing is concerned with the problematisation of what Judith Butler calls ‘the compulsory order of sex/gender/desire’. Relying on queer theory, we examine how Soysal’s Tutkulu Perçem (The Passionate Forelock, 1962), Tante Rosa (Aunt Rosa, 1968) and Yürümek (Walking, 1970) represent female characters’ growing awareness of their rich spectrum of gender performances, as they embrace their desires, transformations and confusions. In this way, Soysal’s works not only take the female body ‘out of the closet’ but also explore its multitude of desires and fluid possibilities.

This book brings together historians from Great Britain, the United States, Germany, France, Canada, Austria, and Latvia who have worked and published on fraternisation between Prisoners of War and local women during either the First or Second World War, providing the first comparative study of this multi-faceted phenomenon in different belligerent countries. By focusing on prisoners as wartime migrants and studying the nature and impact of their interactions with the local female population, this book expands the existing framework on prisoner of war studies. Its substantial scope and comparative approach make it an important point of reference in the growing research field of POW studies.

Abtract of the article:
The chapter "'Helmut Can Be a Worker, Not a Lover': Relationships Between Germans POWs and French Women in Postwar France (1944–1948)"examines the relationship between French women and German prisoners of war (POWs) in France within the broader context of a society focused on the economic, moral, and political reconstruction of the Republic after the German occupation of the Second World War. Some 600,000 German prisoners of war lived and worked in France from mid-1944 to December 1948 and became an essential source of manpower, especially in the countryside. By focusing on the politics of gender and sexuality, the chapter shows how the Liberation press reflected and influenced public opinion on the relationships between German prisoners and French women. It analyzes the role of the French state in the restoration and creation of norms in postwar France and uses the German prisoners to discuss the country’s difficult transition from war to peace after liberation

De nombreux projets de ponts traversant le Détroit de Kertch ont été conçus dans le passé, avant le pont actuel mis en service en 2018. On s’intéresse aux décisions qui ont conduit successivement les protagonistes successifs de cette histoire à lancer (ou à renoncer à) des projets entre 1903 et 2014, et aux facteurs de géographie économique et de géopolitique qui ont orienté ces décisions au fil du temps. En conclusion, on imagine quel effet pourrait avoir une normalisation du statut juridique international de la Crimée sur le trafic du pont d’aujourd’hui.
